the 19th wife by David Ebershoff 3 Stars
His 19th wife was his 1st cousin and his niece - how does that work out …?
So his sisters kid
And maybe the sister married an uncle
Does that sound right?
or no might need to draw a family tree
Out for that one
Talk about no self
Control - first wife ok
Second wife doesn’t know she’s gonna be a second. Also note he stole her from his own son.
The missionaries are lying about the polygamy part,it’s really a trick to get people to populate the community without knowing what they are getting into.
Now “saving” desperate people from the trip to from England it’s like a planned predator prey situation.
Desperate girls look like they are heading into wife numbers 3 and 4. sisters not much older then his daughter who look at him as a protector father and he’s lusting. Make me physically sick
His wife is like how many bro .. if she’s crying don’t do it…
They threaten the wives by saying it’s part of her salvation to tolerate the other wives.
His wife doesn’t even know he’s already married his second and now he’s trying to get a third and looking at the two girls under his roof.
Sounds more like a certian kind of addiction to me, bro needs therapy.
So he’s keep all the wives separate in different houses at this point, and they kinda know about each other but don’t know each other.
Spiral spiral spiral 🌀
Now one wife is bankrupting him and his other wives will have rights to the same amount of gifts and money.
Still not enough for me, I can’t believe the sisters would share a house and a husband with each other. Creepy and dark.
First wife is just like get away from me and leave, and he’s like wanting consent, a little late now to even ask, brainwashing, making her say what he knows she doesn’t mean.
Second wife doesn’t care she just wants the things he promised her before the third wife came alone.
So chapter 10 and 4 wives in, could just save the people had to own them and possess them as well, not all of the men did that, he was a creep no question, needs self-control.
I gave this book 3 stars would have liked a little more history on the mainstream religions and why they stopped practicing polygamy, this story was very scary to read thinking one man has so much power in a modern time. I found this to be more of a sex addict or eclectic story defiantly a cult but even more so these people who live these power dynamics are so fascinating to me and I would have love a little more inward looking of the man creating all this awful time consuming and life ruining chaos.
The firsts - LDS - dark history - polygamy - over the top- heartbreak - Utah outskirts
